The Tijuana Xolos will play a friendly match against Mexico’s storied Águilas del América in San Diego this summer, a sports promoter announced.

The firm, Pazzo Sports, organizes matches on the U.S. side of the border known as San Diego Classics. In February, the company presented Xolos against Chivas USA at Torero Stadium, a game that Tijuana won 5-2.

This summer’s game featuring Club América will be played at Qualcomm Stadium but the company did not announce a date and time.

The Xolos squared off against América last month, a game that ended in a 1-1 at Estadio Caliente.

América is one of Mexico’s storied soccer franchises and demand for that game was so great that some Xolos season ticket-holders “rented” each one for $200. It’s worth noting that Caliente Stadium only seats 16,000.

In the San Diego Classic of July of 2010, América faced the English team Portsmouth, a game the Mexican club won 2-1.

Este será el segundo enfrentamiento para los Xoloitzcuintles ante un equipo de la MLS, puesto que elaño pasado, el conjunto fronterizo se llevó la última edición del San Diego Clásico al vencer a LosÁngeles Galaxy. El Clásico de San Diego se disputa en Universidad de la ciudad californiana y hacontado con la participación de equipos internacionales como el Club América de México y Porsmouthde Inglaterra.

En la pasada edición de este evento, el Club Tijuana y LA Galaxy convocaron a más de 6milaficionados que abarrotaron el Torero Stadium para presenciar aquel duelo que se disputó el pasado 2 de Marzo y que terminó en la tanda de penales tras un emocionante empate 2-2 que se dio en la UniónAmericana.

The LA Galaxy announced that the club will play Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente of Mexico’s Liga de Ascenso in the “San Diego Clasico”, presented by Freeway Insurance, on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego.

“We are very excited to announce this match against Club Tijuana in San Diego, a market that is important to our organization and one where we have wanted to play for quite some time,” LA Galaxy President of Business Operations Tom Payne said. “In addition, it is a good game for us against a quality opponent as we complete our preseason preparations for the 2011 MLS season.”

Club Tijuana is coached by former Club America and Mexican National Team midfielder Joaquín Del Olmo, who in his first season with the club guided the Xoloitzcuintles to their first title last December, winning the Liga de Ascenso Apertura Season. Led by their captain Javier Gandolfi, goalkeeper Adrian Zermeno and forward Raúl Enríquez, Club Tijuana posted an impressive 11-1-5 record last season. Gandolfi, a defender from Argentina, and Zermeno, who spent eight seasons at Toluca, spearhead their defense, which conceded only seven goals in 21 games last season.

Portsmouth are heading to America for three pre-season friendlies in July. The Blues will face Mexican giants Club America, an Edmonton select side and MLS outfit DC United. Pompey will fly out to California on Monday, July 12 following a friendly with Havant & Waterlooville at Westleigh Park on Saturday, July 10.

They will face Club America at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego on Wednesday, July 14, followed by a match against an Edmonton Select on Wednesday, July 21.

Pompey complete their trip with a game against DC United at RFK Stadium, Washington on Saturday, July 24. The Blues last crossed the Atlantic in the summer of 1951 for a tour of South America. They faced top Brazilian sides Fluminese, Botafogo, America, Santos, Sao Paolo and Palmeiras, drawing three matches and losing the other three.

Ticket information for these games will be confirmed in the next few days.

Mexico’s Storied Soccer franchise, Club America agrees to return to San Diego to take place in the “San Diego Clasico” presented by BUDWEISER. America last visited San Diego in July of 2008 when they played arch rival Cruz Azul at Qualcomm Stadium.

This year the match will take place on July 14, 2010 at Qualcomm Stadium against a top Europeon Club that will be on the West Coast for pre-season.
